ART OF GROWTH

Supporting the arts for over 40 years.

Standard Bank’s commitment to the visual arts is like adding a splash of colour to the world. From the Standard Bank Gallery in Johannesburg to a 40-year partnership with the National Arts Festival, we’ve played a significant role in shaping culture through the arts. The Standard Bank African Art Collection, a joint venture with Wits University, dates back to 1978, and is one of the largest of its kind, housing over 5 000 objects from the continent.

The Standard Bank Corporate Art Collection, spearheaded in 1968 by former chairman AAQ Davies, houses works by the internationally acclaimed Marlene Dumas and Irma Stern, as well as trailblazers like David Koloane and Gerard Sekoto.

The Standard Bank Young Artist Awards (SBYA) were established, together with the National Arts Festival, in 1984 and have recognised over 170 artists under the age of 35, in various disciplines. In 2023, we collaborated with SBYA winner Blessing Ngobeni to “hide” a unique artwork within a Sunday newspaper for one lucky reader to win.

We believe art has the power to inspire, challenge, and transform societies. Through our involvement with the arts, we invest in the future, nurturing new voices and providing platforms for diverse perspectives to be shared and celebrated.
