A Scotsman with a great eye for a business gap first spotted the economic advantages of having a local bank finance the growing wool trade in Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha) in the 1850s. Inspired by the Eastern Cape’s expanse of sky, sea, and rolling hills dotted with sheep, John “Jock” Paterson’s idea gave birth to The Standard Bank Group in 1862.
